OCEANetwork has recently become aware that some ESDs have told homeschoolers they are required to notify them if they move out of their district, stop homeschooling, or graduate their homeschoolers. No such notifications are required by law. (Review current homeschool laws here.)

If your ESD attempts to require these notifications, please contact us! OCEANetwork’s stance is that when homeschoolers respond to such requests and provide extra information, they build an expectation and endanger other homeschoolers.

Recently, we contacted the Superintendent at InterMountain ESD about the following statement on their web site:

“Oregon law requires you notify the IMESD if you move out of Morrow, Umatilla, Union, or Baker counties, so that we may remove your child/children from our records.”

At OCEANetwork’s prompting and after reviewing homeschool laws, they removed the entire statement from their web site. We appreciate IMESD’s prompt attention to this matter!

NOTE: Linn Benton Lincoln is another ESD that OCEANetwork contacted because of language on their site that required similar notification. Two weeks later, when we determined they had not updated their site, we sent out an advisory. (Read that advisory here.) OCEANetwork verified 4/30/2024 that since then Linn Benton Lincoln ESD has removed the offending language from their site.
