We all start homeschooling our children for different reasons - they are struggling in school; they are being bullied; we want to give them an academic advantage; they are painfully shy; or we feel called by God to this adventure. There are probably as many reasons as there are families. As we travel down the homeschooling road as Christians, God often gives us a greater vision - a vision to raise our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord as we homeschool.

As we get involved in the day-to-day work of homeschooling, our vision can go out of focus. We get our eyes on the wrong thing. Tunnel vision focuses on lesson plans and the number of pages completed. Or what someone else is doing. Or onto the “perfect” homeschool family. When we get our eyes on the wrong goal – when our vision becomes blurry because we are focusing on the wrong thing – we need to stop and look up.

We cannot complete our calling in our own strength, but He has provided everything we need. Sometimes that's in the form of an encouraging word from a conference speaker, the "just right" curriculum found in the Exhibit Hall, a friend giving you a hug between sessions, or the encouragement of being around so many other like-minded families. But ultimately it comes from the Word of God, which is a light unto our path, and it comes from “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Heb. 12:2). It is OCEANetwork's prayer that God will work in families at the 2014 conference as we seek to make God the source of our vision.

So, come to this year's conference where the theme is "Be Thou My Vision," and let's remind ourselves that God is our source of strength, and everything we need to keep our vision in focus for our homeschool journey.

Who is OCEANetwork?

OCEANetwork is a statewide, nonprofit organization whose mission is to "support, encourage, protect and advance private Christian home education in Oregon as a tool for family discipleship." The four families on the board of OCEANetwork volunteer their time to answer first-time questions, assist support group leaders, travel and speak across the state, promote the vision of Christ-centered families, publish newsletters, lobby to defend home education freedom, and organize an annual conference. OCEANetwork has been protecting and supporting homeschooling in Oregon since 1986.

The Oregon Christian Home Education Conference is one of the American Home Education And Discipleship Conferences held by state organizations and promoted by the National Alliance of Christian Home Education Leadership. The National Alliance is a "support group" for board members of Christian state homeschool organizations. Alliance affiliates are working together to promote their 33 great homeschool conventions in 30 states. If you're not in Oregon, find another American Home Education And Discipleship Conference near you.
